welcome to "news4 today." i'm eun yang. >> i'm aaron gilchrist. a cool start to the morning again but if you liked yesterday, you'll want to spend sometime outside today too. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein here with what to expect as we head out today. >> unless you're an allergy sufferer. the pollen count is high so reduce your time outside if you are allergic. right now temperatures are way down. only near 40 degrees much of virginia now, much of maryland, right near the bay waters it's near 50. in the district of columbia we're in the 40s. near 40 shenandoah valley. upper 30s to near 40 western maryland and west virginia. hour by hour this morning going to need a jacket through mid morning. we'll have it in the mid 40s by 8:00. by 9:00, low 50s. by noontime, low 60s. sunrise 6:09. we'll have a light easterly breeze. hometown forecast arlington by noontime around 60 and partly cloudy. a few clouds now east of the

those winds could get worse as the day goes on. look at these aerial shots. the fire has ripped through foursquare miles of riverside county destroying one home and causing hundreds of other families to evacuate. 400 plus firefighters also flying in helicopters and air tankers working to gain control of that fire. it's the biggest in a series of fires throughout the state right now. mostly they say fueled by nonexistent humidity there and dry grasses and trees. at the live desk, melissa mollet, news4. today president obama begins a three-day trip to latin america. mexico will be his first stop. he'll meet later today with mexican president enrique pena nieto. they will likely discuss trade ties between the two countries. president obama will also visit costa rica during this trip and meet with that country's president. d.c. mayor vincent gray wants washingtonians to drive legally even if they're in this

country illegally. he and other city leaders will introduce a bill today allowing all d.c. residents to get a license. congress would have to sign off on the legislation. maryland and four other states allow undocumented immigrants to get licenses. this is going to be a busy day for maryland governor martin o'malley. he's signing into law more than 200 bills the general assembly passed this year. the first bill he'll sign will repeal the death penalty in his state. that was one of 30 measures the governor proposed this year and he'll also establish a medical marijuana program allowing researchers to give marijuana to sick patients. governor o'malley will sign a bill that bans cyberbullying. anyone that harasses a minor online faces a year in jail. we're learning more about three of the boston bombing suspect's friends. they violated visas by not going to class regularly. the fbi says they hid and destroyed evidence when they saw

their friend dzhokhar tsarnaev's picture on tv after the attack. a third friend also facing charges of lying to federal investigators. the fbi does not think any of them had anything to do with the actual bombing itself. today we'll have a reporter in a culpeper courthouse as a former police officer is sentenced. daniel harmon-wright was convicted of shooting a woman in her car in parking lot. harmon-wright says he fired when she rolled up the window up on his arm and started to drive away. the jury suggested a total of three years in prison for harmon rig wright. >> a man is accused of attacking a taxi driver who is a iraq vet. >> the driver took video you saw of the confrontation.

the man called him a terrorist and then punched him just because he's muslim. we learned the man in this video is ed dahlberg, president of emerald aviation in manassas. his lawyer says he regrets his comments but denies getting physical. churches across the country are opening doors early to begin a national day of prayer held every may. this year president obama is asking churches to pray specifically for the victims and survivors of the boston bombings, texas fertilizer plant explosion and newtown shootings. there is controversy. gay rights groups are protesting the event's honorary chairman pastor greg laurie set to speak at the pentagon as part of the day's events but protesters want the invitation withdrawn. the pentagon chaplain invites m him every year and will keep that tradition. an automaker will make a

donation. volkswagen will give $10 million to a nonprofit organization, the trust for the national mall. this is the largest private donation ever given to help makeover the mall. the volkswagen of america ceo says the reason behind this gift, he was shocked to see poor conditions on the mall. tonight the waiting game is over for cap fans. they'll launch the sixth straight playoff run. they finished the season on a hot streak winning 11 of the last 13 games and they're going up against the new york rangers. last year the rangers knocked caps out in the second round. puck drop 7:30 tonight on nbc sports network. the verizon center worked out a deal with metro could keep trains running an hour late if the game goes past 11:00. a day of protest ending in violence on the streets of seattle. the dramatic new video showing

a florida couple's wedding came to a screeching halt when a snake came slithering into the wedding ceremony. look at the snake. it disappeared for a few minutes and came right back. the newlyweds say the snake circled for a bit and then made the shape of a heart. they believe the animal will bring them good luck for the rest of their marriage. we certainly hope so. >> that's not a heart. >> it looks a little bit like a heart. snakes can arrive at your wedding, you better hope that's good luck. >> i wonder what kind of snake that was. facebook us or tweet us if you

i'm melissa mollet at the live desk. in a few hours, president obama will name his choice for u.s. trade representative. a longtime friend of the president has played a big role in shaping trade policy. the announcement expected at 10:00 this morning. seattle is quiet this morning. this was the scene when police fought protesters after a may day rally. 18 people were arrested and eight officers were hurt in the chaos. doctors expect all of them to be okay. new this morning, an american man facing 15 years of hard labor in north korea. kenneth bay was sentenced yesterday. they say he was convicted of crime against the state. we don't know what those crimes involved. bay is a tour operator from washington state. he was arrested last november in a special economic zone in north korea that borders china and

russia. also new this morning, the vatican will welcome back a former pope. pope emeritus benedict will move into his retirement home in the vatican gardens today. he spent the last two months at the papal vacation home while an old vatican monastery was being renovated. we're following a developing story this morning. the death toll continuing to climb from last week's garment factory collapse in bangladesh. 20 more bodies pulled from the rubble overnight. at least 149 people are still missing. rescuers are using cranes and cutting machines to clear tons of concrete and search for more victims. they say it could take another five days to clear the rubble. this morning '90s music fans are mournings love of a rap duo kris kross. chris kelly died of an apparent drug overdose in his atlanta

home yesterday. an autopsy will be performed later to confirm the exact cause of death. kris kross was best known for their hit song "jump." the pair toured with michael jackson and had their own video game. kris kross spawned a short lived fashion trend by wearing clothes backward. kelly was 34 years old. don't be concerned if you see a bunch of fire trucks and ambulances at dulles airport on saturday morning. it's a drill. more than 100 people will simulate some kind of accident involving a plane. the exercise will take place on a closed runway starting at 8:30 and should be wrapped up around noon. faa trying to figure out how two planes clipped each other during a takeoff attempt. it happens at newark liberty natural. a scandinavian airline's plane left wing clipped the tail of a united airlines plane while on a taxiway. the jet taxied back to the gate but the express jet had to be towed back. the nationals found a way to beat the braves and all it took

was one swing of the bat. a two-run homer led the nats to a victory and zimmerman prevented the braves from making a comeback. hasn't allowed a run in the past three starts. the two teams finish out their series tonight at 7:10. the price of that wind might hae been high. bryce harper left the game after this check swing in the sixth inning. the team is calling it a bruised rib. manager davie johnson says they'll be cautious with their young star. >> didn't want to come out of the ball game but i saw him grimace and i was concerned about him playing. we couldn't take a chance. he could pull a lat or something and be out for a long time. we'll play it day by day. >> jayson werth missed the game. second straight with a bruised ankle. hope they all get well. >> early in the season.

lots more baseball to play. coming up on 20 minutes after 6:00. we're off to a cool start this morning. >> hoping things warm up soon. tom kierein is here with more on the forecast. good morning. >> you need to rummage through your closet and find your winter coat again. it's another cold morning. it's may 2nd for crying out loud. when you step out the door, you'll cry out loud. mperatures are down into the upper 30s to just near 40 degrees across most of virginia, west virginia, maryland, and the eastern shore. and the temperatures are going to hold steady here right near 40 for another hour or so. and then we'll rapidly warm up this time of year. that may sun is climbing high in the sky. montgomery, arlington, fairfax, prince george's county, the district just in the low to mid 40s. by noontime the low 60s. here's your hour by hour forecast by late afternoon should be in the upper 60s. lots of sunshine. a few clouds in and out this morning. this evening under a clear sky if you are going to the caps

we are tracking breaking news on the roads right now. an accident had traffic at a standstill on the outer loop. >> here's what happened. the accident moved to the right shoulder lanes. a live look at chopper 4 you can see traveling outer loop of the beltway past the entrance ramp to the beltway. not bad. let me show you where it's bad. new hampshire avenue heavy on the brakes already. steady delay. continuing on utter loop of the beltway pass georgia avenue looks better. the other thing i'm tracking is delays on i-270 southbound just a bit slow here at tuckerman lane. folks are hitting the roads. as far as accidents on i-270 southbound or northbound, not seeing any but just volume. i'm back in ten minutes with another update. back over to you both.

>> all right. thank you. it's shaping up to be another great day here in the washington area. take a look at this gorgeous sun over the clouds. a live look of sunrise coming over the nation's capital. >> storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein has a tough job this morning outside on the weather deck. it doesn't get better than this. >> it's cold around the region. down around 40 degrees. look at how lush and green the lawn is behind me. grass growing rapidly from the early week rain that we had and there's dew on the grass this morning and on your windshield as you head out the door. you'll need a jacket. we're down just into the low 40s nearby suburbs rural areas of maryland, virginia, west virginia upper 30s many locations. our by hour today temperatures will be chilly through mid morning. by late morning to near 60 degrees. low 60s by noontime. a few clouds coming in from the east this morning. then going sunny this afternoon. sunrise was at 6:09. sunset at 8:02.

prince george's county hometown forecast. bowie near 60 degrees with a few clouds around and then sunshine breaks out the rest of the afternoon. details on the rest of your may 2nd third coming up in ten minutes. aaron? >> all right, tom. thank you. we'll check in on breaking news in alexandria. a water main break. tony tull live for us. where are we exactly? >> reporter: we're right in the 5000 block. just to give you an idea of the scene right now, you can see the water bubbling out of the concrete. this looks very unassuming. one thing i want to point out if i can get down here is that if you look between the pavement and concrete in the road you can see the water still bubbling out and it has actually raised up the pavement here and if we look down just a little bit farther 50 to 75 feet down the road you can see it bubbling out of the road as well.

one big concern right here right now is that this might create a sinkhole situation because there is a large amount of water underneath the roadway right now. the police here alexandria police had people move cars off the street. waiting on the water company to come turn off the water. looks unassuming. you can see this water goes for quite some time underneath the roadway here so they are worried that this could create a sinkhole. right now i talked to three or four neighbors out here. they say they are their water so we're trying to figure out what this main serves. we'll continue to stay on the story and check in with you in a few. >> tony tull live in alexandria. thank you. the man accused of sending a poison laced letter to the president will be in court. a detention hearing is scheduled for james dutschke. he's accused of sending a letter with ricin inside to president obama, a u.s. senator and a mississippi judge. prosecutors say dutschke poses a danger to the public and is a

flight risk. dutschke denied the charges against him. federal investigators are looking into a possible human trafficking case in mclean. it happened at a compound owned by the kingdom of saudi arabia. our cameras were not welcome there yet. >> reporter: do you know about what happened here last night with the women? don't touch the camera, please. don't touch the camera. >> we are told police were called to rescue two women inside the house tuesday night. one woman reportedly tried to escape by squeezing through a gap in the front gate. a spokesman for homeland security tells news4 officers did encounter two potential victims of trafficking and the investigation is ongoing. a d.c. man could spend up to 100 years in jail for a brutal beating on capitol hill. tommy branch was found guilty yesterday on six counts for robbing and beating maslin last august. branch is accused of beating him

almost to death. qui convicted now. branch is one of three arrested in that attack. he'll be sentenced on july 2nd. maryland's corrections department says it is questioning more employees after widespread corruption in a baltimore jail. three top administrators at this jail have taken lie detector tests. another 65 supervisors throughout the department will be questioned. this comes after 13 female corrections officers were charged with smuggling drugs, cell phones and other contraband into baltimore's largest jail. that scheme was run by a prominent jail house gang. in court today for the latest chapter involving the governor manage's former chef. schneider said he gave investigators evidence of wrongdoing by governor bob mcdonnell and his family a year ago while looking into the allegations against him. the judge will hear attorney general ken cuccinelli's request

to withdraw as prosecutor in this case. cuccinelli says he can't be on the case because the governor is his office's main client. today virginians will see this new political ad. >> when i was 14, i saw a chance to literally pave the way to my future and i started a business paving driveways. >> that is the first campaign ad for the presumptive nominee in the race for governor of virginia. attorney general ken cuccinelli is his likely opponent objecting to the ad releasing a statement that reads in part the first campaign ad attempts to erase his record as a showman, salesman and money man. >> you may want to stop by politics and pros on the way to work. the bookstore is handing out wristbands getting you into michelle obama's book signing next week. that's next tuesday morning at 11:15. you have to buy the book to get in. politics and pros will hand out

wristbands at 9:00 this morning. expect a long line. the justice department will fight to keep the morning after pill out of younger teen's hands. the government appealing a judge's ruling to lift all age limits on who can buy the pill without a prescription. they say the judge doesn't have authority to rule in the case. word of the appeal came a day after the fda says it would allow anyone 15 or older to buy one brand. plan b one step without a prescription. the current age limit is 17. more than half of new moe mothers in d.c. are not married according to new numbers from the u.s. census bureau. nearly 51% of women in d.c. between the ages of 15 and 50 who gave birth last year are not married. that's more than any other state in the country. louisiana took the second spot with 49%. only 39% of mothers in maryland are single moms and 31% of new mothers in virginia are also not married. right now winter weather is making for a rough morning for some people. here's a look at the snow

it is going to be a beautiful spring day in the district but it looks more like the dead of winter in minnesota. take a look at our radar. a heavy band of snow is moving through the state right now. mike seidel is live right in the middle of it in rochester with a look at the conditions there. mike, i can't believe what i'm seeing right there. this is may. i don't envy your job right now. >> reporter: i much rather be where you are, eun, in northwest d.c. right now. actually, you know, if it's going to snow, eun, we might as well break records. the all-time may snowfall here going back to 1893 in rochester is two inches. we haven't heard from the

airport. out here i just measured five to six inches of snow on may 2nd. this is unbelievable. temperature is 32. the sun will be up in 20 minutes. we won't see it, the high sun angle like the early part of august is really going to do a number on the roadways but there is so much slush out here and snow right now it's going to turn into slush. they haven't plowed the frontage route. u.s. 52 has been plowed and driving in here last night was white knuckle driving. average high this time of year is mid 60s. they had great weather over the weekend into monday. temperatures were in the low to mid 70s. that's all come to an end. fortunately there are no leaves on the trees here yet so that's going to cut down on any power problems. as you can see, eun, this is some amazing stuff even in minnesota. it doesn't often do this. very rare. i don't think anybody will see this much snow in their lifetime again in may in rochester. >> let's hope not.

a next week, seven-day outlook in ten minutes. >> we'll start in virginia. this is just coming into first 4 traffic office. suspicious package has south fern street closed between army navy drive and 12th street. police are on the scene. avoid the area. let's head back to the beltway. chopper 4 is in college park and look at the delays here. this is because of an early morning accident. temporarily blocked all of your lanes while crews moved the accident from the left side of the roadway to the right shoulder lane so travel lanes are open but in college park absolutely jammed. delays continue. we're talking heavy delays. so if you haven't hit the beltway yet, seek an alternate route or pack patience and remain calm. let's head over to 50 in maryland. slow here at 202. these delays between the beltway just slow as you make your way on new york avenue. drive time ten minutes between the beltway and d.c. 295. aaron? >> thank you. a developing story right now in

the fbi doesn't believe any of them had anything to do with the bombing itself. all morning we've kept an eye on an online fund-raiser for the transit police officer hurt during that shootout in watertown, massachusetts. so far people have donated more than $75,000 to officer rich and donohue. some vmi graduates organized this fund-raiser. he graduated from vmi. the organizers hoped to raise just $10,000. >> it's a really great thing to help someone who has done such a great sacrifice for not only the community of boston but also for the country. >> you have about 46 hours left to donate to the fund. you can find a link to that site on nbcwashington.com as well as the "news4 today" facebook page. later today our northern virginia bureau will keep an eye on the culpeper courthouse. a former police officer convicted of manslaughter in the death of patricia cook. they say he shot her in her car

police say there have been almost 80 car break ins in the last two months and neighbors tell us they feel violated. >> we have nothing of value in our car but it was still very disconcerting to see glove compartment completely cleared and clearly someone who we didn't know had been in our car. >> community leaders tell us right now plain clothes d.c. officers are patrolling the streets. so far no arrests have been made. right now howard county police are asking for your help to find the men who robbed a gym. police say three men broke the padlocks on the lockers at the supreme sports club in columbia last week stealing credit cards and cash. the men then went on a shopping spree buying $8,000 in gift cards at a nearby drugstore. church doors are open around the country for a national day of prayer. president obama is asking churches to pray specifically for the victims and survivors of the boston bombings, texas fertilizer plant explosion and newtown shootings.

there is some controversy. gay rights groups protesting pastor greg laurie set to speak at the pentagon as part of the day's events but protesters want that invitation withdrawn because laurie teaches that marriage is only between a man and a woman. the defense department says they plan to keep the tradition. many of you probably have phones or tablets supplied by your job but soon you may have to start bringing your own. cnbc's kayla tausche is here with more on that. good morning. >> good morning, eun. bring your own device is a growing trend at u.s. companies. a new survey shows by 2017, four years from now, more than half of companies will require their employees to supply their own tablet or smartphone on the job. nearly 40% of companies expect to stop supplying people with devices entirely by 2016. unbelievable. there are many benefits to adopting this approach. the biggest being lower costs.

has a skin allergy. the study says skin conditions like eczema tend to decrease with age. the group says it doesn't know what's behind the spike but the study did show that children living with affluent families were more likely to develop allergies. we will find out today if a third time is the charm for a bear in virginia. the animal targeted a leesburg family twice this week. diane howard says the bear ripped off her garage door on monday night. the bear came back on tuesday night apparently to destroy what was left of that door. >> all of a sudden i heard bang. i ran to the stairs. doug, get down here. whenever it is breaking into your house, my knees were knocking i was so scared. >> howard says she thinks the bear is trying to get into the garage for food in the fully stocked fridge there. if the bear returns, she plans to let her dogs out and to turn on the car alarm to scare the bear away. today a german automaker will make a major donation to help makeover america's front yard. voelkswagen will give $10 millin
